The Return of Radiohead (On October 10th)
It had been widely speculated for some time that Radiohead would release their 7th Studio Album by unconventional methods. They announced today that it will be out on October 10th via digital download! Which is pretty exciting, if every band I liked did that I’d probably have cardiac problems. Which to be honest, on a Student Diet, I’m already half way to my grave.
They have decided that you can purchase their new album ‘In Rainbows’ at any price you choose. Is this a little pretentious? I feel slightly wrong by putting down 1pence, and therefore feel morally inclined to atleast spend £7. It’s an interesting development though. Since finishing their contract with EMI, it seems like Radiohead are dealing with things in their own way. Their last album ‘Hail to the Thief’ came out in 2003, and it’s taken this long for them to get here (after solo projects and numerous other side-liners). This makes quite a big difference from the say, minor league bands who pretty much have to get a new album out every 2 years. It is likely that Radiohead’s new album will sell by the bucket load, and with Ash moving away from making albums altogether, it’s some strange times in the world of music. I think music publishers should start to get a little bit worried – could Oasis be next? They no longer belong to a record company either.
Although this move by Radiohead, will come as bad news to record stores. You’ll still be able to buy a discbox of ‘In Rainbows’ on Dec 3rd, which will be a good collectable (£40 though – maybe they’re thinking people really will take liberty at this name your own price gag) – but I like record stores, especially independent ones like Rockaboom in Leicester, who already suffer from the likes of HMV and Virgin MS, who now have extensive online stores. So Radiohead won’t be doing them any favours.

Here is one of the songs featured on the upcoming album, it’s called ‘Nude’. I might be mistaken, but it was a song left over from ‘Ok Computer’, which came out 10 years ago.
